Protect Those Little Pearly Whites: 4 Signs Your Child Has Hidden Dental Problems

If you have young children, you need to be constantly aware of the medical and dental issues they're facing. Unfortunately, young children can't always tell you when something is wrong, especially when it comes to their teeth. That's why it's important that you pay attention to the way they're acting. Often, it's their behavior that will clue you in to the fact that your child is experiencing some dental problems. Here are four tell-tale signs that your child is dealing with hidden dental problems. If you notice any of these signs, you should contact your dentist as soon as possible.

They're Favoring One Side

Kids won't always tell you when they have a toothache, but they'll show it. One way that kids will show that they have a toothache is by favoring one side of their mouth. If your child is chewing with just one side of their mouth, or is trying to avoid one side of their mouth when taking a drink of liquid, you need to take them to the dentist. Favoring one side is a good indication that your child has a dental issue that needs to be resolved.

Their Gums are Swollen and Red

Your child's gums should be a nice, healthy shade of pink. When problems start to arise around the teeth, their gums may turn a deep shade of red or purple. They may also become swollen. These gum changes are often a sign of infection or gum disease. If you've noticed a change in the color or appearance of your child's gums, you should schedule an appointment with their dentist.

They're Refusing to Brush Their Teeth

If your child is suddenly refusing to brush their teeth, or they'll only brush for a matter of seconds before putting the toothbrush away, they could be experiencing a dental problem that will require dental care. Contact your dentist and schedule an exam as soon as possible. This is particularly important if your child is trying to avoid specific areas of their mouth.

Their Tooth has Changed Colors

Your child's teeth should be white. If their teeth are beginning to change colors, there's a good chance that there's a dental problem you'll need to have taken care of. Dental infections and decay can cause teeth to darken. In fact, in extreme cases the affected tooth may begin to turn black or gray. If you notice that your child's teeth are changing color, it's time to get to the dentist.
